Collie didn’t have much to say as they left the hotel and strolled down Front Avenue, the old-fashioned streetlights lighting the way. When they reached Big Z’s Hardware and Lumber, they turned and made their way to Main Street, and started walking west, in the direction of the Graff. That was when Michael reached out and took her hand. She gave him a quick glance, then laced her fingers with his.

She might be worried about him messing up his relationship with Garrett because of her, but she liked having him there. Despite the issues bouncing around in his head, Michael’s mood felt lighter. His decision to stay had been the right one. He could have gone back to Chicago, buried himself in his work. Left Collie to deal with the situation she’d brought upon herself.

He would have hated it. He belonged here. With her.

They passed the Copper Mountain Chocolate Shop, which was closed for the day, and Collie almost left a nose print on the window as she studied the display of truffles. Michael made a mental note to come back when the store was open. And maybe he’d hit the flower store next door.

Maybe he’d court Collie as he’d always wanted to.

Maybe this time he’d get it right.

When they got back to the hotel, Collie gently disengaged her fingers from his. “Would you like to see what I’m working on?” she asked.

“Sure,” Michael said, a touch mystified as to what that might be.

She led the way across the lobby, lifting a hand to Cathi at the desk, then turned down the hallway leading to the ballroom where he’d first kissed her.

Collie pulled a key ring out of her pocket and unlocked the tall doors. They stepped inside the room and she snapped on one set of lights, leaving half of the room in darkness. Their footsteps echoed in the nearly empty room as they crossed to a long table on the far side.

“We have several events clustered together,” Collie said as they reached the table. “A fiftieth anniversary party followed by a wedding that was shoehorned in as a favor to the owner, and then another wedding.”

“Sounds hectic.”

“Walker lives for this kind of thing,” Collie said. “But this is a little too jam-packed for comfort. Anyway...” She reached for a neat pile of photos and a sketch pad. “These are the ideas I got from the Internet, and this is what we hope to do for the first wedding, which is flower-free, by the way.”

Michael leaned closer to see her sketches of the windows, drawing in her scent, which made him want to wrap his arms around her.

“This is the one I like the best. We make these amazing flowers out of opalized paper and arrange them as a header for the windows and as a bridal wall backdrop. We can incorporate eucalyptus and other greens, as long as there’s no pollen involved.”

Michael picked up the sketch book, his eyebrows lifting as he studied the drawing. “Looks great.” And like a lot of work.
